Summary: Shizuka is a lonely soul. This is all based on the idea of DxW being “soulmates” or tied by a red thread or whatever. I’ve always wondered when looking at those other Donut fics with alternative Watanukis. If Watanuki wasn’t meant to exist, how could he exist in so many other worlds?
Warnings/Spoilers: I was surprised to find that there wasn’t a lot of people who read both TRC and xxxHolic. If you have read the most recent chapters, there are hints about it scattered through some of the fic, so I’d probably go catch up. Unbeta’d, btw.
 

Shizuka is a rare soul; where others are created in pairs, he is not. He may in fact be the only one in existence with such a lonely future- everything, even atoms have pairs they are attracted to, but when he is birthed for the first time, he has only himself. That is not to say that Shizuka is not loved, however his life is destined be short, or very long and lonely. Yet, despite this doomed solitude, he has luck on his side. When Haruka is first born he learns to love Shizuka so much he does what few have managed to do and creates his own ties to him. It is only later on, in a different world where the Earth is drowned in magic and everything grows from seeds that Haruka notices Shizuka isn’t missing his other half, he just doesn’t have one. This hurts Haruka more than words can paint images in the mind. And so he watches over him, protects him, and in some occasions manages to spoil him, but in the end, he knows he cannot fulfill the void in Shizuka’s heart and so seeks out to help him the only way he can.

“Yuuko-san, I have a wish,” says each Haruka.

Yuuko will share her sake with him and once they finish socializing, she makes her demands for the payment. They are all great for the price of happiness to grace Shizuka’s lonely life is high, almost beyond reach, but each Haruka has the means to cover it and will cover it if it means his dying breathe must be exchanged.

“He will be as happy as he can be.”

“Yuuko-san, I have a wish,” continues each Haruka.

For one wish can never cover all the damage one such wish can make. He asks for a little time and time is something that she has never been able to master, but there are loopholes she can weave through. Despite the high price she must pay in the very end, right now there’s still a little bit of the old her that sympathizes and loves far too easily. Haruka reminds her of someone she once loved too long ago and unlike that person Haruka realizes the consequences of his actions. So she puts time at the lowest value she can get it; he delivers to her a coveted book from the Sakurazuka Estate to an ancient seal from Korea.

“You will have enough time.”

Haruka always gives her a too grateful look and uses this precious time to ease away from his world as quietly as he can without hurting as much as it should. This is the way of things and he is one she  shall always expect at her doorstep.

Then a hand isn’t reached for and everything changes. Shizuka was born a single soul, but hitsuzen makes him a pair. Syaoran made his choice and his choice didn’t just create sorrow. Watanuki will have to do the same.

The Haruka of her world does not offer her anything for Shizuka’s happiness and finally meets that woman he was always meant to meet, a woman he left alone in all the other worlds (the price is always greater than what is demanded). He dies well-loved and well-remembered.




AN: OMG I HOPE YOU GUYZ LIKE IT LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! Asdjklk This is a freedom fic btw; me and my boyfriend just split and I’m all happy. Does that make me a bad person? OH WELLL!!!!
